Ward off Climate Change

About the author

Gary Warden was raised in the Perth Hills. After graduating from the University of Western Australia with a degree in Geology, Gary joined BHP Billiton where he spent 18 years working in a variety of roles in a number of locations around the world. Prior to leaving BHP Billiton in December 2006, Gary was Global Manager for the company's US$1Billion business improvement program.

While he was originally sceptical about the claims relating to climate change, he became convinced of the urgency of the issue in early 2006. He left BHP Billiton primarily to spend more time with his young family, but also to dedicate himself to creating a more sustainable life for himself and his family and to support others in making that change.

In September 2007 he was trained by Al Gore and has delivered the "Inconvenient Truth" lectures to thousands of west australians since then. In November 2007 Gary ran for the senate in the Federal Election representing the Climate Change Coalition.

In addition to his climate change lectures, he has facilitated Living Smart workshops across Perth. Between 2008 and 2009 he was on the Executive Committee of the Conservation Council of Western Australia including one year as Vice President.

Gary co-founded and is Executive Director of the very exciting Days of Change program, one of the largest sustainability programs in Australia and is now General Manager WA for Eco-Kinetics, one of the largest Solar PV companies in Australia and subsidiary of ASX-listed CBD Energy.

Successful Tour of Southern WA

by Gary 11/2/2007 11:26:00 PM

I've just got back from my tour of southern WA.

The first of my lectures was in Dunsborough. Despite my aprehension that complacency and other priorities would result in me talking to myself, about 25 people turned up for this event. We even had a good smattering of people who asked intelligent questions about the science behind climate change which gave me the opportunity to fine tune my skills at winning over an audience.

The area of greatest scepticism was reserved for the question of the degree to which human activity was contributing to climate change.

I must admit that I was tipped off that this would come up, so I had prepared a couple of new slides for this occurence.

I've taken the liberty to show these below for those interested. I think that the data is pretty compelling.

On Wednesday night we held a similar session in Albany and were thrilled with the turnout of more than 50 people. When you consider that we were up against Spicks and Specks and the Chasers, we thought that the result was very respectable.

We even had a visit from the Greens Upper House MP for the Southwest, Paul Llewellyn, who contributed to a lively discussion.

Based on the success of these two meetings, I've now scheduled sessions throughout the metropolitan area over the next two weeks. Please check out the schedule - I'd love to see you at one of the sessions.

Let me say a BIG THANK YOU to those who helped make these talks a success. To Bob Hadlow who provided moral support and drove me around so that I could do e-mails and phone calls. To Nathan, Celie, Tim and Georgia Hadlow who provided great support in Albany. And to Dick and Val Schonnel, John and Eleanor Slee and Leslie and Chris Fulston who provided my "rent-a-crowd" in Dunsborough and helped out with the delivery of refreshements and subsequent clean up. THANKS!!

The IPCC findings are very compelling and I think hard for any audience to argue with. Especially when you consider that over 2,500 scientists from 130 countries compiled the latest IPCC report and controversial research (e.g. melting of greenlands ice sheet) was left out. Leaves very little room for skepticism!

It's great to hear you're making a difference and getting people to think about this urgent issue.
